Dexion Longspan 2 Shelving: A Practical Buyer's Guide

If you are planning shelving for a Sydney warehouse, storeroom, workshop or parts area, Dexion Ultima Longspan 2 (LS2) is designed for adjustable, hand-loaded storage. The best configuration is not simply the widest bay you can fit: it depends on what you are storing, how your team retrieves it, the available floor space and the required load capacity.

What is Dexion Longspan 2 shelving?

LS2 is a modular steel shelving system built from upright frames, horizontal load-bearing beams and appropriate shelf decking. Frames use uprights connected by bracing; beams hook into the upright slots to create adjustable shelf levels. It can be arranged as individual bays or a run of connected bays to suit the storage area.

Most importantly, LS2 is intended for goods that staff place and retrieve by hand. It is not a pallet racking system and must not be loaded by forklift. If pallets are being lifted into the rack with mechanical handling equipment, a pallet racking solution such as Speedlock Mk8 should be assessed instead.

Choose dimensions around your stock

Start by measuring your products or cartons: width, depth, height and the practical clearance needed to pick them safely. Dexion's LS2 system is available in multiple bay widths, heights and depths. The Dexion Storage Solutions online configurator offers selected standard combinations rather than every engineering or catalogue configuration.

Think about handling as well as fitting the item onto the shelf. Deep shelves may store more cartons but make goods at the rear harder to reach. Wide bays may simplify storing awkward items, although capacity varies with the specific beams, decking and configuration. Measure the overall space, including access around the shelving, rather than choosing solely from the nominal bay width.

Starter bays and add-on bays

A starter bay forms the beginning of a shelving run. Add-on bays extend the run and share the adjacent frame rather than duplicating every frame. This can be an efficient way to create a continuous bank of storage. Check your final number of bays and end frames before ordering; the components for an add-on arrangement are not identical to purchasing separate standalone bays.

Plan the shelf levels

LS2 beam levels can be adjusted in 50 mm increments. That helps when stored products or carton heights change over time, but each level must be placed to suit access, clearances and the approved configuration. Group items by size and picking frequency before deciding where shelves should go; leaving enough working space above each product is usually more useful than squeezing in one additional level.

Which shelving surface should you choose?

Different applications may call for sheet decking, steel shelving or mesh shelving. Consider the goods being stored, contact surface, cleanliness, environment and the approved loading arrangement. Where your configuration uses MDF decking, do not assume an MDF load rating is identical to a published particleboard rating. The capacity of the complete shelf must be confirmed for its exact components and conditions.

How much weight can LS2 hold?

There is no single safe load figure for every LS2 bay. Load capacity depends on beam span, frame selection, shelf material and support arrangement, level spacing, and the way loads are distributed. A beam-pair rating alone is not automatically the allowable load for a shelf board or for the entire bay. The correct limits and any required load notice should be confirmed for the supplied arrangement.

Installation environment and stability

LS2 is principally designed for dry internal applications. Floor condition, stability, anchoring and any special layout requirements must be checked for the installation. Outdoor, damp, mobile and unusually tall installations are not covered by ordinary purchasing assumptions and should be referred for project-specific advice.

Choosing LS2 shelving in Sydney

If you already know your shelf dimensions and intended arrangement, you can explore available standard LS2 shelving combinations through the Dexion Storage Solutions online store: https://shop.dexionstoragesolutions.au/longspan-shelving . For larger storage areas, non-standard applications or uncertainty about load requirements, contact our team for design and product advice before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

Can LS2 be used as pallet racking? No. It is designed for hand-loaded shelving, not forklift pallet placement.

Can the shelves be moved? Beam levels are adjustable in 50 mm steps within an appropriate configuration; always follow the relevant installation and loading requirements.

Is every advertised beam load also a board load? No. Confirm the beam, decking and complete bay capacities separately for the actual installation.
